That's stupid! I don't know the background of the Kyle Smith who was inquiring about STI-prevalence on campus or views he has, but it annoys me to see his attempt at finding out sexual health information and publicizing it being put at opposition with another form of finding out and distributing sexual health information. Fortunately, I think that many students are a lot more intelligent than Grossman (I hope I'm not being too idealistic), so hopefully a few crazy people won't create a divide between different groups working to promote sexual health.

A lot of the "science" peddled by these moral scolds in white lab coats is pretty weak. And it's all in the service of helping those poor helpless females stay on their pedestal, lest their reputation be further sullied by our post-Sixties cultural "pollution."

True, I'm sure she means bonding of the 'lets go pick china patterns' variety, because of course, women are so emotionally fragile re: sex, that we can't separate the two, and 'nice girls don't' and lots of other things I've read but am too tired to paraphrase from Nancy Friday books.

Though, not so secretly, I do actually like to bond with my partners when I can. Sex is more fun when you actually like and get along with the other person.

Using the term "bonding" to mean "appreciate the company and affection of another person" is not what I think Grossman had in mind when she was using the term.

That article is so sad. What a nutjob! You do a very good (and level, if I may say so) job discussing it.

The oxytocin stuff bothers me. She's not the only one talking about it. Remember when abstinence-only "sex ed" groups started trumpeting about HPV? You can't protect 100% with condoms, so it was their argument that sexual abstinence til marriage was the only way. And what an argument! Be heterosexual, attempt to find a life partner, marry them, hope to God they don't cheat, and finally it's OK to have sex. Really! No risk there!

I wonder what Grossman thinks about birth control.

Telling me that I'm biologically predisposed to bond over sex because I'm emotionally weak, and thus I shouldn't have it? Thanks for setting women back a good 50 years, and taking away my choice while you're at it.

I look forward to that article, Rona! At which point I will append a link to it to this post. :) Also, being a Recognized Authority and stuff, you could potentially have a larger impact than I do here, which would be lovely to see, too.

Not, mind you, that they'd publish it from an avowed crazy liberal like me, but I'm sure I can find something to do with it :)
