This is well known among some dog training circles: the variable reinforcement method, aka operant conditioning (Skinner, etc.) :)
I would *never* have thought about it in these terms, but it makes perfect sense...!

Whoa. This is kind of awesome. I can already think of several applications, including explaining orgasm denial to people who don't understand it ("<i>Everyone</i> wants orgasms!"). It might also account for the love of the hunt with its "failure"/"success" ratio, and any number of survival contexts built into us genetically. Thanks for sharing! The knowledge is indeed a good power.

I'm not one into orgasm denial on MY end (though I've apparently really grown to enjoy denying other people orgasms), but I do definitely get the point about the excitement of the "maybe." That's how I feel about flirting. The chase and the "will it happen, will it not" is SO FUN. It reminds me to not jump right into something immediately, but instead savor the interactions and the anticipation.

The anticipation and uncertainty...so addictive.

Great post! A very good relation of one of my favorite aspects of orgasm denial: it is biologically hotter if I continue to act on whim. So long as you never know, you'll always be wanting. I realized recently that, in fact, at the beginning of every day there are only Maybe days. It's just that by the end of every day, most Maybe days have turned out to be No days. But just as I am never bound or required to grant you an orgasm, I am also never bound or required to refrain from giving you one, no matter what period of denial we were working up to. I am free to do what I like, which means that there is always the chance, MAYBE, that you'll get to come today. So that at the end of every day you can be resigned to not having come, but not resigned to not getting to - there is always the chance that MAYBE, TOMORROW ... and so on. I like that.
